Running Away From Home

My grandmother is moving out of my mother's house. During my last visit, she shared with me a host of old things her children wrote when they were little including the following note my mother and her sister left the first time they ran away from home:

To Dear Mom

Me and Phyllis are running away from home Tuesday afternoon at 1-o-clock because nobody likes us. Everybody calls us names and that means they don't like us. So if you don't want us to run away do us that favor. these are the things. Calls us names and hollers at us and other things too.

Mary Kay and Phyllis

We know that all of yous don't like us, that's why you did this to us.

Mary Kay (age 6) and Phyllis (age 5) packed up their pink patent leather Barbie suitcase with some snacks and walked two blocks before getting tired of running away. They returned home before their mother could even find the note or notice they were missing.
